Do my back's joints literally go "out"?

It can sometimes be quite difficult to explain and understand exactly what has gone wrong when you have hurt your back.  Sometimes, particularly when you were doing something and felt it “go”, it is described as being “out of place” or “out of joint”, but is this actually what happens?

Well, not really.  The strong muscles and ligaments that support the spine and its joints mean that they’re fairly hard to displace in normal situations.  What can happen, though, is the ligaments around the joints can be sprained (in the same way as you can sprain your ankle) and the muscles can spasm as well.  There are millions of nerves around each joint, and if something like this happens it can cause severe pain.

When this happens, the joint is no longer able to move freely the way it should, so Chiropractic then releases off the muscle tension, encourages blood supply to (and therefore healing of) the ligaments and restores the normal movement of the joint.

So there you go – feel free to describe your back as “out”, but perhaps now you can understand that this is a colloquialism, rather than a literal occurance!
