Journals: the secret to a happier you?


If you have found yourself flagging through February, you are not alone.  It’s definitely a hard month, with the weather still not being that marvellous, dark nights and nothing all that great to look forward to in the near future.  We can tell ourselves that Spring is just around the corner, and come March it will start to feel true, but for the time being the gloom can be hard to beat.

If you are looking for a new way to beat the blues, have you thought about keeping a journal?  It’s long been thought to have a positive impact on our outlook, giving you space to organise your thoughts, reflect on your day, consider your goals and ambitions and generally have a bit of “you” time.  It can also be a useful way of getting things off your chest without worrying about how it may sound to others or saying something you may come to regret in the future.

Personally, I think there’s a lot to be said for writing it by hand as well.  We’re so attached to our tech these days, that there’s a real danger we forget the pleasure of putting pen to paper; the actual physical contact of pen on paper, the satisfaction of looking at past pages you have written on.  Somehow, to me, looking over pages of typed print on a screen is nowhere near as pleasing.  Add to that the fact it can be a simple way of keeping your writing skills current – how many times, as a new patient arrives at the clinic, have they commented as they fill out the information form that it’s the first time they have put pen to paper in a long while, that it actually feels odd to hold a pen again?

So why not give it a go – rediscover your inner self, and maybe you’ll be able to look forward to the coming Spring with a bit more optimism? You may even find things like personal and work relationships improve when you don’t have to bottle everything up inside but also don’t vent at any one poor person who catches you at just the wrong moment!
