Type II Diabetes

I’m sure you’ve heard the stories: Eat this magic stuff and your diabetes will disappear! Cut out carbs and all your ills will vanish! Sugar is the spawn of Satan, eat it at your peril!

But is any of it actually true? Specifically, does any of it have any evidence whatsoever that it will help Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM)?

First, let me clarify – Type II DM is generally developed later in life.  Initially, your GP may suggest improving your diet to help control it.  If that doesn’t work, perhaps they will put you on a medication called metformin.  If it continues, you may end up using insulin injections or other medication to control it.  There is also Type I DM, but that’s a whole different ball game, is usually developed at a young age and has to be controlled throughout life with insulin.

There is very strong evidence for a definitive link between Type II DM and obesity, and as 12% of the UK population is currently obese with the percentage rising all the time, clearly it is going to be a major problem.  So if we can find a way to halt or even reverse its progression, that’s got to be a good thing.

Unfortunately, the research is still in early stages at the moment.  It is, however, thought that weight management is the most important factor rather than pushing any particular dietary requirement such as low-carb or high-anything-else.  It has been shown that a weight loss of 5-7% can effectively halt the progression of Type II DM, while a weight loss of 15% (or 15kg) can reverse the disease in some cases.

Although the research is still sketchy, it makes sense.  When you are obese, your body has filled up all its normal fat storage areas and has started depositing the excess fat elsewhere, such as in your liver, pancreas and skeletal muscle.  Surely, if you have fat stored in your pancreas where it is not supposed to be, that organ is not going to work as well as it is supposed to? And what is one of the functions of your pancreas? Insulin production.  So if you have so much body fat that some has been stored in your pancreas, your insulin production probably isn’t going to be all that normal, leading to Diabetes Mellitus.  Reduce the levels of fat and maybe you can restore the function to normal?

Trouble is, creating a lasting weightloss of up to 15Kg requires a lot of time – and time is something the NHS simply doesn’t have enough of.  Far more achievable for them to try and manage the progression through conventional means than try a newer approach that only may achieve the desired result.  Sure, bariatric surgery is effective and can achieve the desired result, but not everyone is eligible.

Until the evidence is in place, therefore, it’s safe to assume you won’t get NHS help with the required lifestyle management.  And while there are private clinics offering help, it’s a minefield making sure you are going to someone reputable who has the knowledge and the latest research at their fingertips to make sure you are changing yourself in a way that is healthy and beneficial.  Besides, if we don’t know if it’s going to help, why bother?

Well, 80% of coronary heart disease, 90% of type II diabetes and 1/3 of all cancers are thought to be the result of poor lifestyle.  So whether you will achieve a halt or even reversal of your Type II DM, you are bound to be better off for trying to exercise properly, have a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet that keeps you as slim as possible within your correct BMI range.  And who knows? If you haven’t got Type DM it might just mean you never get it!
