Dizzy?

21/06/2016

Chiropractors – and manual therapists generally - are best known for treating problems involving pain.  Almost all the patients who present to my clinic come with aches and pains of one sort or another somewhere in their body.

But that is far from all we can deal with.  Recently, I attended a seminar about various types of dizziness, and while I found it a very interesting refresher on the finer points of this symptom and the causes, it also brought to my attention how few people would even think of calling their chiropractor if they started to experience that horrible sensation of the world spinning around them – or them spinning in the world.

There are many types of dizziness, of course, and many words used to describe the sensation: vertigo, spinning, light-headedness, giddiness, muzziness – the list goes on!  Not all of them can be helped by chiropractic, but your chiropractor would at least be able to help identify which type you are experiencing and help you get the help you need.  This can be extremely important, as while the most common forms are totally benign (although very unpleasant), some are a signal that something much more serious is going on.

One common form of dizziness, goes by the wonderfully hard-to-say name of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (or BPPV).  While that seems a bit of a mouthful, it’s also quite informative as names go, if you take it apart.

Benign = not fatal

Paroxysmal = happens in bursts, in between which you’re fine

Positional = generally triggered by a certain position, or change in position, such as rolling over in bed

Vertigo = pretty self-explanatory…makes either you or the world spin!

This particular form of vertigo is caused by a dysfunction in the inner ear, in the parts associated with balance.  It’s easily diagnosed, and even more easily treated.  A certain series of manoeuvers which your chiropractor will take you through and in about 4 minutes it can be problem solved!  It may come back at some point, but possibly not for many years.  Besides, if you’ve had it once then you know how to recognise it and can get straight back to your chiropractor so that they can take you through the right positions again to sort it out.

So if you rolled over in bed and suddenly the world took off, why waste any more time on sleepless nights? Just have a chat with your chiropractor and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

There you have it then.  You don’t only have to be experiencing pain to visit your chiropractor.  Whether it’s BPPV or some other form of vertigo, dizziness is something else we know quite a lot about and absolutely something which should be looked at as soon as possible so that you can get the help you need.
